I think meta-commentary is something that needs to be discussed in this anime. Despite it being center around this guy who loves eromanga, which is a very relatable thing in general, a lot of things that happen to a typical eromanga protagonist happen to him. It’s the same reason why most people don’t like shows like SAO or Oreimo (Not just because of incest in both cases). When a character’s situation in meta and the characters are cliche, it really brings the show down. To bring in an opposing example, Eromanga-Sensei handles what this show is trying to do, but with more eloquence. Not just from a technical standpoint, but in terms of writing as well. The characters themselves either must be brought out of their comfort zones or do things one wouldn’t expect. It just doesn’t work otherwise.
